Internet of the things or IoT (as it is called), is the concept of connecting any device to the Internet and to other integrated devices. It is a huge system that involves technology of diverse smart machines, people and objects.
This revolution has been powering transformation for enterprises, consumers, and governments. The IoT market is growing fast, but it is still difficult to imagine all the new possibilities that it can bring to our routine in the near future.
Have you ever stopped to think that in a few years you will be able to have your entire house connected and working according to your behavior? Or that you will easily go to work solving your tasks while your car drives autonomously for you? At this time, you will look back and ask yourself how difficult things were in the “past”, when IoT didn’t exist.
From small and simple devices such as home lights until self-driving cars or autonomous airplanes, IoT is now part of our lives. Many systems are already reality, and others are on development stage. The devices work most of the times using data captured from the environment that they are located, having some sensors, processors and communication hardware. They operate basically with M2M Communication which means machine-to-machine, and exchange information between them.
These machines are developed to be autonomous, not needing humans’ intervention, however, it is possible to have their mediation to access data, or to configure the machines on the way that they want.
Fellow Consulting develops a device based on IoT
Using the concept of IoT, Fellow Consulting has developed an intelligent soap dispenser, which is automatically controlled to never be empty.
This soap dispenser, developed for Diversey, contains a small scale in and recognizes when the soap refill status is low, according to its weight. Once this low level is detected, the soap dispenser sends an SMS to the maintenance system and a service technician is contacted to refill the soap. This device reduces the effort of un-necessary service visits dramatically, saves time and ensures that it will be never empty.
Much has been invested in IoT field and companies which have technological assets and efficient systems will certainly be on top. According to the article published by the website Business Insider, The Internet of Things (IoT) market is on pace to grow to over $3 trillion annually by 2026.
